3D LiDAR measurements in 101

Select a work item in a report, measure its area on a compatible iPhone, and check the recalculated cost. Use the verified measurement as the quantity in an estimate.

3D LiDAR measurements in 101

On a compatible iPhone, you can use LiDAR to measure an area and use the result to price a line item in a 101 report. Select the work item, mark out the surface, and check the area in the calculator. 101 then recalculates the line item total using the quantity and unit price.

For an estimate, use the verified area as the quantity. This guide covers how to check a measurement, calculate the area of a complex surface, and use the result at a client meeting.

How 3D LiDAR measurements help in 101

Measure the area on site with a compatible iPhone. 101 sends the value to the calculator for the selected report line item, where you can check the measurement alongside the work quantity and cost.

For example, to measure a floor area for tiling, select the “Tile installation” line item in the report and mark out the area of the floor. The app sends the calculated area to the calculator. Once you have checked the result, you can see the quantity and recalculated cost in the report.

For planning, enter the verified area in the corresponding line item of a separate estimate (in Russian). The estimate shows the planned cost. The report records the quantity of work you entered. You can then compare the planned and actual quantities for the same work item.

Which devices you can use for LiDAR measurements

You need a compatible iPhone with a LiDAR scanner and the 101 app for iOS. Apple lists the sensor in the iPhone 12 Pro technical specifications. Check the specifications for your iPhone and make sure the measurement mode is available in the calculator for the report line item.

If measurement mode is unavailable, measure the area with a suitable tool and enter the verified quantity in the line item manually.

How to measure an area and check the quantity in a report

Start by choosing the work item you want to measure, such as “Wall plastering.” The app sends the measurement to the calculator for that line item.

  1. Create a “Report” event in the project and select the line item you need.
  2. Open the calculator for the line item and tap the ruler icon to open measurement mode.
  3. Mark out the area you want to measure. The app sends the area to the calculator.
  4. Compare the reading with a measurement taken on site. Use the calculator for any additional calculations you need.
  5. Return to the report and check the quantity and recalculated line item cost before saving.

For the full walkthrough, see how to take measurements on a compatible iPhone (in Russian).

How to calculate the quantity for a complex area

When a room has several walls, reveals, or recesses, divide the surfaces into sections. Measure each section and check the readings. Add only non-overlapping areas that belong to the same work item.

For example, if two walls to be finished measure 8 m² and 6 m², enter 14 m² if both areas belong to the same line item and you have already deducted any openings. If you have a separate line item for reveals, measure them separately.

If readings are inconsistent or a section is difficult to mark out, check it with a tape measure or a laser distance meter. Use the verified quantity in your calculation.

How to use measurements and your price list at a client meeting

At a client meeting, you can measure the surface, check its area, and enter it in an estimate line item. 101 uses the unit price for that line item to calculate the preliminary cost. You can show the client what work the estimate includes and the quantity used in the calculation.

If the client needs unit prices, export the client version of the price list as a PDF (instructions in Russian). It shows the prices for the client. Use the estimate to show the quantities for their project.

How to introduce LiDAR measurements to your team

Try this workflow on one typical project. Your team can see who takes the initial measurements, who checks them, and where the final quantities are used.

  • Assign one person to measure surfaces on site and designate who will check the quantities before materials are purchased or work begins.
  • List the surfaces on a typical project, such as walls, reveals, recesses, and floors. Note which line items use each area.
  • Enter the verified planned quantity in the estimate. Check the actual quantity separately for the report on completed work (in Russian).

If 101 is not installed on your work iPhone, use the 101 download page (in Russian).
